#5 "Island Swirl " Kitchen Redesign
As part of a major remodel in the late 1980's the interior walls separating a small dining room, kitchen and laundry were removed to create an airy kitchen/family room combination in this home.
The kitchen's general layout had worked very well but the home owners wanted to redesign the two level center island, because the work space around the island's cook top was very limited and traffic flow around the island was tight at meal times. Their other objectives were to bring more daylight into the center of the room and to update the color scheme and finishes to achieve a warmer, richer look. It also was important to them to have an informal eating area. In keeping with the rest of the house, the design style would be eclectic with a somewhat Spanish ambience.
Razvi immediately saw that a simple rearrangement of the furniture at the family room end would free up space for a dining table and six chairs between the family room and kitchen area. A single level island was designed, which expanded prep areas and storage as well as providing space for two stools at one end, convenient for breakfast meal planning and even laptop Net surfing. The dramatic granite slabs with their swirling incursions of salmon and gold, picked up the earthy hues of the existing saltillo tile floors. The cabinetry was refaced with maple wood stained a deep rich tone. A new 4 foot skylight provided a soft diffused light to the center of the room.
